The Coin Slot, the first magazine for the hobby was founded by pioneer dealer, John Caler, in 1974 - before collecting became popular. In June of the following year Harrah's Casino conducted an auction and four months later Roy Arrington had his first auction. Then in 1976 ,California was the first state to legalize slot machine collecting. Consequently, collecting mushroomed and there became a need for a magazine.
In June of 1976 Bill Harris took over the Coin Slot adding the famous logo and a Question and Answer article by Dick Bueschel near the end of the year.
